The Dirty Nil - Smite

1. Nicotine
2. Beat
3. New Flesh
4. Wrestle Yu To Husker Du
5. Pale Blue

The Dirty Nil have released their third album titled "Smite". This one has that indie punk style that the band has continued to play since their sampler. These guys have a similar sound to that of Pup, The Menziners, or Pkew Pkew Pkew, so if you like those bands, you should like this album. They have done a solid job here. When looking at the recording quality of this album, the album has been recorded to an okay sound, but that seems to be the way the band wants to sound. A raw, distorted, rough recording gives them that indie punk feel they are going for. The instrumentation on the album is not bad, this band can certainly play, and they play fast. They play pretty solid all in all. Now onto the vocals and lyrics, the vocals on this album are pretty raw, as is a theme with The Nil's previous albums. The vocalist seems to go for a harsh screamed /sung vocal, that seems very reminiscent of 80's punk. He can certainly sing, and for the most part, you can make out what he is singing about. Not a band singer. With the lyrics, the band goes for songs about one person not letting the other know how they feel, relationships, convincing someone you're better than their significant other, and more. These seem to be songs more about dudes on pedestals, which seems to be kind of the thing right now. If you are looking for a single to this album, give the song "Wrestle Yu To Husker Du" as this is the best song on the album, and it really shows off what this band can do.  The Dirty Nil have made an album that shows off their style the best so far. These songs are pretty decent, and they get some notice. Not a bad album all in all, and we think this will start bringing more people to them. This isn't personally our kind of band, but we see why people like it. Listen to this album to decide for yourself what you think about it.
