The Beaches - Heights

1. Strangelove
2. Little Pieces
3. Zsa Zsa
4. The Dance
5. Hey I Love You

The Beaches have released their second album "Heights." This album follows along the same lines as their previous effort. They continue their classic rock and indie vibe that they have decided to go with since the name change. Their mix of Janis Joplin and Metric is a combo that really seems to work well. If you are into either of those artists, you could really like this album. They have done a pretty decent job on it here. When looking at the recording quality of this music, the album has been recorded to a very solid standard. These songs have a great sound and is clear without loosing the classic rock edge. The instrumentation on this album is pretty solid for such a young band. These girls can certainly play and have the old rock in their fingers. Now onto the vocals and lyrics, the vocals on this album are done quite well. You can hear the vocalist very clearly, but unfortunately unlike their previous album, this one seems to have a little bit of a weirder vocal style then the last one. Something about this album and the vocal style just seem to go a little more into left field of classic rock. She can certainly sing and the harmonies are on point though, good job overall. With the lyrics, the band goes for again a little off kilter on the lyrics as well. This album has a feel of being a little too experimental. They do in a different way talk about things like relationships etc. in their songs here though. If you are looking for a single to this album, give the song "Strangelove" your attention as it is the one that is the most "normal" on the album and is the only catchy song on this album as well. The Beaches have for sure gone in a bit of a different direction, and for that we give them credit. The band certainly has the talent and we can't wait to see these girls get recognized for it. We do hope however that they go for a more traditional classic rock/indie sound with their next album and they tour around a little more. Listen to this album to decide for yourself what you think of it.
