Single Mothers have released their second album which is self titled. This album follows the style and sound the band created with their debut album. They have a very indie punk sound that makes them quite different than your average band. They have a similar sound to that of a PUP or The Dirty Nil, so if you like those bands, you could really like this album. When looking at the recording quality of this album, the album has been recorded to a pretty raw standard, but we feel the band was going for this and it gives off a very punk rock feel to this album. The instrumentation on this album is different because the band is able to play sloppy but good, so that it has a very old school, crusty punk feel to the album, but in terms of skill, the band plays pretty average here. Now onto the vocals and lyrics. the vocals on this album are a little raspy and distorted, which is an effect the band is using for the album. The vocalist can sing pretty clearly but probably doesn't have the greatest singing voice. We think he does a good job giving off that older punk style here though. With the lyrics, the band gives messages of girls and stories of interactions with them, going to parties and having a crummy life as well as girls again. Now the band really likes to have a whole story that you follow with each song, which is cool to go through. If you are looking for a single to this album, give "California Girls" your attention, as this one gives you the best idea of the album overall. Single Mothers have again given you that dirty, grimy, raw indie punk that seems to be getting more and more popular here, while giving more for you to understand what the band is about. Pretty good job for what they are trying to do. Listen to this album to decide for yourself what you think of it.
